Founded in 1780, the city of Greensboro is 31 km west of Madison, 35 km southwest of Eatonton, 55 km north of Athens and 43 km southeast of Sparta. It was appointed as the county seat of Greene County, Georgia in 1787. Greensboro was incorporated as a town in 1803 and then changed to a city in 1855. The city is located in the heart of Greene County.

According to the US Census Bureau, the city covers 17.6 square kilometers. Lake Oconee is 8 km east of this city and the Oconee National Forest is 3 km southeast of Greensboro. Presently, the city of Greensboro is home to 3,426 people. The population density is estimated to be 195 people per square kilometer.

Greensboro is well known for its rich Southern tradition and history. The visitors are impressed with the rich history, especially the elegant churches and antebellum homes. The historical buildings in the Greensboro downtown feature antiques, gifts and jewelry, and clothing. The Greensboro’s ‘Goal’ is the oldest penal structure in Georgia.
